Your Life Is a Dog Training Classroom

 

We all can relate to that feeling of being in the classroom.

The rigorous structure, and rules that need to be followed. When the bell rang we believed that learning was over, and it was time to relax, but even if we didn’t know it, we are constantly learning every day, all day.

We take in information and figure out how to best use that information to better our lot in life.

Here is my idea of why your life is a dog training classroom.

Dogs are the same, they are constantly learning about their environment through experience.

That’s why they sniff everything, they are gathering information left by the one who made the scent.

For example if a dog pees on the ground other dog’s will come and sniff it, the information that is gathered will tell the dog a lot about who left it.

Were they sick, male or female,young or old, and if the female is in heat, or ready to breed. They then make decisions that will enhance their opportunities for improving their lot in life.

While dog’s can most definitely benefit from the structure of an obedience class, its important for us to remember that if we allow our dog’s to be full participants in our lives we have ample opportunity each day to practice the skills our dog’s need to be well-mannered and obedient companions for our family’s.

Like taking them with you when you go shopping.

There are many stores that will allow your dog to come inside with you. You should always call ahead to be certain.

Some example of such stores would include, out-door stores, ie, camping, hunting. Stores that sell plants, and the such, there are even some outside restaurants that will allow dogs.

Once inside you can practice having your dog be polite when people stop to admire him, sit and stay in the aisle while you shop, and even lay down while you have a bite in an out-door cafe. You can have your dog sit and stay while you load your goodies in the car.

Teach the dog to come when called while you are at home, if the door bell rings, when you want him to come and eat, and when you want to let him outside for a break.

Take the dog on short errands is great for socialization, even if your only going for 10 minutes, this will also give you an opportunity to teach him to get in and out of the car politely.

When you’re just sitting around watching t.v. or on the phone, or busy making dinner, you can work on having your dog just relax and be quiet. Teaching your dog to have patience will greatly benefit you especially in those times when you can’t give them the attention.

Making your dog work for what he wants is a good rule to live by, it don’t really matter what you ask him to do, it could be to sit, stay, lie down or come here, as long as they do something in return for what it is they want.

This is just a few ideas on how to take advantage of how your life is a dog training classroom. I’m sure you can find many more opportunities to engage your dog in new learning experiences.

Remember, the more experience your dog gains the more educated he will be.
